Winter 2016 Anime Episode 1s

At least it’s more eventful than last season.

Joukamachi no Dandelion Episode 1 — Soooo, are we gonna address the elephant in the room?

Joukamachi no Dandelion is about nine superpowered siblings competing to be elected for their father’s throne. I have to ask: why does it matter to the citizens that they can choose which corrupt despot to win again?

This looks so wrong. Coincidentally, it's a representation of everything this show knows about monarchy.

Classroom ☆ Crisis Episode 1 — The propaganda is strong in this one

Welcome to Corporate Elitism the Anime!

I liked it better when anime was about ordinary students, not this rich snowflakes bullshit.

Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace Episode 1 — I put more edge in your edge so you can act clever while you act clever

Ranpo Kitan will probably be a mediocre show, but that still depends on how much space it will give and to what direction it will take its more interesting aspects. It’s a psychological anime about how an ordinary student gets involved with a super genius broody teenager detective, and I expect it won’t amount to much more than that sounds — you know, Japanese Sherlock Holmes except edgier. However, the characterization of the protagonist is compelling, at least enough to give Ranpo Kitan another episode. After all, the very atmospheric opening indeed hints at a more character centric show.

Summer 2015 Anime

It’s time to get unreasonably optimistic again. But seriously, the new season is looking much more promising than Spring was.

We Need to Talk About Ore Monogatari

maxresdefault Ore Monogatari!! is a popular and critically acclaimed manga. It won the 37th Kodansha Award for Best Shoujo Manga and was nominated for two others. An anime adaptation is coming out this season, and to a much, much more positive reception than I hoped… that is, when it’s not eww shoujo cooties eww. I’d imagined that after the niche status wore off a more critical discussion could take place — I was wrong. Sorry for the horrible unsubtle reference, but I think we need to have that discussion, and I’d rather start it sooner than later. (more…)

Winter 2015 Anime Retrospective

Originally this was supposed to be a Death Parade rant, but since the season has almost* finished airing, I thought “why not mash everything together so that I have something positive to say too.” Mediocre season overall, but I really liked Koufuku Graffiti. (more…)

Fujiwara-sensei, the mangaka of Inu x Boku SS, passed away on March 31st at only 31 years old. You can verify the news on ANN. (more…)

Now and Then, Here and There

All you need to know.

All you need to know.

The premise of Now and Then, Here and There (henceforth NaTHaT) is like Digimon’s – except without all the digimon, obviously. Shu, our protagonist, is transported to a fantastic world with a black-and-white morality and nonsensical and internally inconsistent politics and physics. He saves the third world country poor helpless citizens, among whom he is much more popular than he could ever have been at home, and then returns to his carefree privileged life. I jest, I jest. The suffering of aforementioned citizens confronts you in much starker, more explicit details, which includes forced child conscription, rape, massacre, and torture. At the same time, Shu also perseveres through a much harsher ordeal, which includes… being hit repeatedly in the head with the back of a gun, I guess. And then he tells them it can’t be all that bad.

All right, all right, sorry. The premise is, Shu meets a girl named Lala Lu, and while protecting her from strange people gets transported to a world in which a crusading nation named Hellywood is carrying out a campaign of terror and massacre. He meets people, inspires them, and saves the world, though not necessarily everybody. There, that’s the most generous description I can give. (more…)
