Summer 2015 Anime

It’s time to get unreasonably optimistic again. But seriously, the new season is looking much more promising than Spring was.

Watching

Charlotte

What can I say, it’s PA Works (who I adore, especially for Tari Tari and Canaan), and best PV this season. The story doesn’t seem terribly original, but like Angel Beats!Charlotte will probably be well made and well told, with good music, interesting characters, a well thought out setting, and a nuanced and worthwhile story. Now, school SoL dashed with a bit of the supernatural, and with narcissistic characters to boot admittedly sounds edgy, but 1. it can’t be that different from Angel Beats! and 2. the narcissism doesn’t seem like a gimmick.

Miss Monochrome

I liked S1. Cute shorts about the titular character’s road to becoming an idol, with a slightly surreal tone, because she’s a super advanced robot who can defeat alien invasions. Some GL subtext as well: she wants to become an idol in order to reunite with a friend (who has presumably been reincarnated).

Gangsta

I’ll give it one episode. I read the manga, which has been compelling, but is turning out to be another meandering meaningless seinen. Also the PV doesn’t have very good animation.

Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace

1-3 ep. I always favor original anime, and not to sound too shallow, but ones based on stories by famous writers sound very promising. I have actually read Rampo too, and he can be interesting when he’s not busy being clever. From the description — boring MC meets genius detective — I hope it’s not just derivative Japanese Sherlock Holmes. That’s to say, this anime has the potential to be very good, but we’ll see. The school setting admittedly isn’t very promising, but I’d be even more skeptical with almost any other setting.

Joukamachi no Dandelion

1-3 ep. The gimmicky premise (royalty, superpowers, hidden cameras, popularity voting) might be saved by the fact that it’s a SoL with a female lead. Could be fun, could be nothing.

Wakaba*Girl

1 ep. I’m not very interested in slightly misogynistic cute girls doing cute things, especially when said girls have no personality, but I’ll put cynicism aside for one episode.

Classroom * Crisis

3 ep. The shorter PV was the second best PV of the season — perhaps by virtue of being inoffensive, so I’m tentatively optimistic. The newest one though, makes the show seem like it’s about a bunch of girls commanded by Good Men, which is never a good sign. Which is to say it might end up being about how to be Good Women in Engineering as opposed to Bad Women, but girls in space have a pretty good track record in my (limited) experience.

Working!!!

Inami a best and you can’t prove me wrong.

Million Doll

Female shut-in who likes girl idol sounds interesting. I’ll probably try at least one episode, but might wait until it’s finished if it’s a short.

Venus Project -CLIMAX-

1 ep. Again girls in space have a good track record, but I can’t work up interest in just any GL-subtext show about nothing.

Makura no Danshi

ssxpu5dbjvmasvsp665v

If this cute boy is not to your taste, various other different darlings will follow him and sweet talk you as if they are laying next to you. Very inspired concept, that’s for sure. Whether it’ll deliver or not I’m happy just knowing it exists.

Into the Trash

Okusama ga Seito Kaichou!

Ecchi with shitty unoriginal premise, what a surprise.

Aoharu x Kikanjuu

I read the one-shot, which features the most annoying whiny adult. Apparently he’s so good-looking and smooth he’s a popular host and target of his co-workers’ envy, and he used to be really good at soccer, and he’s a genius at survival games despite having only just learned about it, and he’s so edgy because he talks about sex in front of children, and we’re supposed to feel sorry for his not having been able to become a soccer star… like I dunno, the rest of us mortals. Nothing to see here, just another angsty whiny series.

Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakeri

They can’t into PV, so I’ll guess they can’t into story telling either. That and it seems generic and boring as shit.

Durarara!!×2 Ten

First season was a shit Baccano! — ten times more women fail, zero interesting or likable character, loses steam/plot/mystery 3 episodes and not 13 episodes in, and ten times more women fail.

Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai

Sexual liberation? I’d have given it a chance based on the description if it wasn’t ecchi.

God Eater

Another fantasy I can’t give a shit about.

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime

If it’s an adaptation of the manga I’m thinking about, just no. If not, the description still sounds pretty cringe-worthy — beautiful girl with red hair (probably plays into the snowflake inherently virtuous and kind stereotype) who rejects a prince’s proposal (why do they never make proposals huh? but the measure of virtue is always how prude they are against bad boys) and decides to follow another ruler (let’s take a guess at how many heteronormative traits they’ll heap onto him).

Jitsu wa Watashi wa

/a/ likes it so it’s probably shit. (But seriously, another shounen romance and it’s a harem: not interested.)

Overlord

SAO cash-in or SAO cash-in? Either way I stopped caring at “virtual reality gaming.”

Sore ga Seiyuu!

Generic cute girls doing cute things, except with no effort. Just like Yuru Yuri S2.

Bikini Warriors

Well, at least it’s honest.

Junjou Romantica 3

Not from my time. I got too used to more …recent BL to even contemplate voluntarily staring at this.

Kuusen Madoushi Kouhosei no Kyoukan

It’s like if they put together the most common phrases from every fantasy anime description.

Kangoku Gakuen (Prison School)

PV sucks. I’m guessing this series will have some interesting ideas and funny moments, but it will take a cosmic miracle to make a good ecchi harem.

Himouto! Umaru-chan

I read the manga, which admittedly is full of heartwarming and funny moments, but all the same I wouldn’t read or watch it again. The characters are empty archetypes acting out scripts which ultimately mean nothing because — despite the series being SoL — none of it has any connection to anything real.
