Oh Great Mighty Amnesty International, Please Tell Me More About How We Should Learn to Love Targeted Ads

So yesterday, AdBlock displayed to its users some advertisements by Amnesty International purportedly to increase awareness about internet censorship. That is to say, in a complete lack of self-awareness typical of the tech sector, AdBlock thought it should educate people about internet freedom/privacy by infringing on the internet freedom/privacy which they were using AdBlock to protect.

Okay, to be more accurate, it thought it could sneak onto the anti-censorship bandwagon to contrive a friendly image in order to shill its plan to gradually let ads slip through its filter. Too bad the only thing it accomplished was make an ass of itself.

2015 Summer Anime Conclusion

So I said I’d watch some anime this summer, and I even reviewed a few of the first episodes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t follow up with episode 2s, but here’s a summary.

So Teppu is Finally Over

Teppuu c005-008 (v02) [Animexis].zip-Teppuu v02 c05-08 [Animexis]-Teppuu v02 c07 - 00a

After seven years, eight volumes, a one-and-a-half-year-long hiatus, and seven scanlation teams that have taken over the task time and again, the last chapter of Teppu has just been released by Waterflame Scanlations. Not the awesome satisfying finale I hoped for, but Natsuo’s story goes on beyond the pages and in a way that is enough for me.

Joukamachi no Dandelion Episode 1 — Soooo, are we gonna address the elephant in the room?

Joukamachi no Dandelion is about nine superpowered siblings competing to be elected for their father’s throne. I have to ask: why does it matter to the citizens that they can choose which corrupt despot to win again?

This looks so wrong. Coincidentally, it's a representation of everything this show knows about monarchy.

Classroom ☆ Crisis Episode 1 — The propaganda is strong in this one

Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace Episode 1 — I put more edge in your edge so you can act clever while you act clever

Kitan5

Ranpo Kitan will probably be a mediocre show, but that still depends on how much space it will give and to what direction it will take its more interesting aspects. It’s a psychological anime about how an ordinary student gets involved with a super genius broody teenager detective, and I expect it won’t amount to much more than that sounds — you know, Japanese Sherlock Holmes except edgier. However, the characterization of the protagonist is compelling, at least enough to give Ranpo Kitan another episode. After all, the very atmospheric opening indeed hints at a more character centric show.

Summer 2015 Anime

It’s time to get unreasonably optimistic again. But seriously, the new season is looking much more promising than Spring was.

We Need to Talk About Ore Monogatari

maxresdefault Ore Monogatari!! is a popular and critically acclaimed manga. It won the 37th Kodansha Award for Best Shoujo Manga and was nominated for two others. An anime adaptation is coming out this season, and to a much, much more positive reception than I hoped… that is, when it’s not eww shoujo cooties eww. I’d imagined that after the niche status wore off a more critical discussion could take place — I was wrong. Sorry for the horrible unsubtle reference, but I think we need to have that discussion, and I’d rather start it sooner than later. Read the full post »
